Sgrafitto Workshop | 2 Sept | 6-9pm

3hAbout this experience
In this 3 hour workshop you will learn the art of Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch"). It is a decorating pottery technique where a contrasting colour is applied over the top of a leather hard, unfired pot or plate and then etched into to reveal the colour of the clay beneath. Most of the time the coloured layer is slip, which is liquid clay. Underglaze can also be used.
During this session, you will paint your plate, that we have made in preparation, then using coloured slips or paints you will carve your chosen pattern, revealing the leather hard clay beneath.
Whilst the pottery's Italian name reveals much about the technique, it also conceals its origins. It is not an art form that heralds from Italy, but Northern Africa.
Sign up to learn more about this fascinating technique and have a go!
Good to know:
-Short nails are much easier to work with but long pretty nails are not impossible to work around!
-Jewellery off!
-Don’t come in your Sunday best, when we play with clay we get mucky!
-As it is the case in most studios, whilst the rest of your piece will be glazed by us after the first firing, the base of your piece will remain bisque. This means it won’t be covered by glaze.
-It takes about a month for your piece to come back to you. It needs to be fired twice and glazed before you can take it home!
